Kusikia at the Fartisan's Cafe

of course the real awesome place to hang out in Olympia is the artisan's cafe. for one thing, they are a coffee shop in the Pacific North West and any of these rare occurences should be sought out continually. also, if you like unharshed mellows and great "ambient" music it is quite the place to hang out.

I went to this wonderful spot tonight to see Kusikia for probably the 10th time. it was well worth it. even worth the awful first band that i didn't catch the name of. i think the line up was one guy on guitar and two guys with their own drum sets. from outside it sounded like one drum set and it always bums me out that a band could put such a cool idea like that to waste on melodramatic, predictable, sleep inducing indie rock.

Kusikia set up, had their usual pow wow and proceeded to rock. the thing that's great about this band is that this band's quiet, mellower songs almost always have a fucking heavy explosion of guitar and drums in there. they only need one guitar because Nsayi is capable of being a good bass player and a good guitarist at the same time on one guitar. she'll get a bass note and then some how fit a melody in with her free fingers, oh and sometimes while singing. and while this is going on there's Peter on the drums beating the shit out of them more freely and rythmically than most can muster. all this happens but at the same time they constantly look at each other and one isn't quiet while the other is loud. rather than two people playing music together they're an actual band. between the two of them there is harmony and fucking solid emotion. i've never been able to hear the lyrics that well but you know some heavy shit is being sung about and what's more, the music is letting you know some heavy shit is going down. they're definately a rock band and their melodies are pretty and consistantly tonal without sounding the same too often but letting you know without a doubt, it's fucking Kusikia.

these bros have a myspace which is more illuminating as to what they sound like. let it be said that i am really honestly truthfully the biggest fan of myspaces shitty ass music player but in this case for some reason the tracks on there don't sound nearly as good as the real deal. this is obviously true and false for all bands as far as recorded music goes but in Kusikia's case they are definately a live band. of the numerous times i've seen them they have never let me down. and also props to them for letting you DOWNLOAD their jams if you want to which is good because free music is obviously ultimate reality.
